Official Steam Deck Support (v1.0.5.1)

Version v1.0.5.1 marks the first build where Elniko confirms Train45 is fully playable using only Steam Deck controls or a standard gamepad. You no longer need keyboard and mouse for menus, anomaly investigation, dialogue choices, or Free H pan mode — every prompt adapts to your active input device.

When a gamepad or Steam Deck controls are detected, all keyboard and mouse UI hints automatically switch to gamepad button icons. This includes interaction prompts, Options menu navigation, route input on the phone map, and gallery replay controls. Desktop players benefit equally when switching from keyboard to controller mid-session.

Before v1.0.5.1, Proton compatibility was possible but unofficial. The dedicated handheld patch resolves controller recognition edge cases and aligns every on-screen prompt with Steam Input defaults.

Recommended Steam Deck Settings

Install Train45 through the Steam library on Deck and allow Proton to initialize on first launch. Enable Steam Cloud if you switch between desktop and handheld saves. Set the frame limiter to 60 FPS for stable pixel-art rendering and connect headphones — audio anomalies remain essential on handheld just as on desktop.

Open Options → Gameplay tab to configure settings that matter most on Deck:

• CRT Filter — New in v1.0.5.1. Adds a retro scanline overlay with an adjustable intensity slider. Lower values preserve readability on the 7-inch screen; higher values enhance the nostalgic pixel aesthetic.
• Train Announcement Frequency — Set to Extended or Off if ambient broadcasts compete with headphone audio cues during investigations.
• Exploration Failure Hints — Keep enabled on first handheld playthrough; the smaller screen makes subtle visual anomalies harder to spot.
• Auto Play — Useful during long dialogue sequences when playing in handheld mode.

Controller Layout & Free H Pan Mode

Train45 maps movement to the left stick or D-pad, confirm to the south face button, and cancel to the east button following standard visual novel conventions. Steam Input allows full remapping if the default layout feels cramped during extended sessions.

Free H pan mode from v1.0.4.2 works seamlessly on Deck: press L3 to toggle panning, then use the analog stick to move zoomed scenes. This replaces the desktop Ctrl shortcut and is the preferred method when playing entirely with handheld controls.

Multi-controller issues fixed in v1.0.4.2 also apply to Deck dock scenarios — only the active controller receives input prompts when multiple gamepads are connected.

Performance & Vulkan on Handheld

Train45 requires Vulkan support, which Proton provides on Steam Deck hardware. The modest 500 MB install and 2 GB RAM minimum mean the game runs comfortably on Deck's default power profile. If you experience shader stutter on first launch, let the Proton cache build complete before judging performance.

v1.0.5.1 also fixes the Walking Penis enemy movement range in its dedicated stage, preventing off-screen collision issues that could affect smaller display viewports. Combined with Torch stage rebalancing from earlier patches, handheld players should encounter fewer unfair deaths in action-heavy anomaly sequences.
